Question 1

What happens when I run out of guesses?

Accepted Answer

Today's run ends at that word, and the page shows how far you got and what the word was. You get one run a day, so there is no retry: the result is locked in until the next run at midnight.

Question 2

Are the words the same for everyone?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Everyone gets the same six words, in the same order, on the same local calendar day.

Question 3

Can I play again today?

Accepted Answer

No. Long Haul is one run a day. If you leave partway through, you pick up where you left off; once it ends, the page shows your result and a countdown to the next run.

Question 4

Which words can I guess?

Accepted Answer

Any word of the right length from a large English word list, including plenty of unusual ones. The daily answers come from a much smaller list of common words, so the answer is always a word you know.

Question 5

How are repeated letters marked?

Accepted Answer

Letters in the right spot are marked green first. After that, a letter is marked yellow only while the word still has one of it left over. So if the word has a single L and you guess two, the second one comes up gray.

Question 6

Do I need to tell colors apart to play?

Accepted Answer

No. Every tile and key also carries a shape: a check for the right spot, a ring for the wrong spot and a dash for a letter that isn't in the word.

Question 7

Where are my streak and results saved?

Accepted Answer

In your browser's localStorage: your daily streak (days in a row you finished a run), how many days you've played, the longest word you've reached, how many runs you've cleared and your fewest guesses in a full clear. They never leave your device.

Question 8

Can I play with a keyboard?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Type letters, press Enter to submit and Backspace to delete. On a phone, use the keyboard on the screen.
